The safety device is for a hydraulic power pipe in which the fluid flows in alternate directions and in a relatively small quantity. It comprises a movable component (6) fitted in the pipe and moving with the fluid, separate it into downstream and upstream batches. When its stroke is greater than normal, it shuts off the pipe. The component can be arranged so as to allow small hydraulic leaks in both directions, and can be in the form of a free piston with a pointed end shutting off the pipe at the end of the stroke. The pointed end may face downstream, compressing a return spring (11) as it moves in this direction.
