1493108 Centrifugal strainer THOMAS BROADBENT & SONS Ltd 20 Dec 1974 [21 Dec 1973] 59403/73 Heading BID A sugar centrifuge comprises a frustoconical drum with a perforated lining 16 and at least one annular baffle 24 or 30, spaced from the lining to leave an annular gap and serving to reverse the axial movement of sugar crystals along the lining, so that they must subsequently accelerate from rest, downstream of the baffle, increasing their residence time in the drum. Fig. 3a shows baffle 24, presenting inclined face 26, mounted adjacent a step in the drum wall to leave gap 28. In Fig. 4 a ring 32 is fitted inside the drum to form an effective step, gap 36 being defined between baffle 30 .and lip 38 on the ring.
