1522047 Tape cartridges INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 17 Aug 1976 [29 Aug 1975] 34141/76 Heading B8M In the operation of an endless-tape cartridge 10, tape 60 passing around a pinch roller 19 is pressed upon and (with the roller) driven by a capstan 91 which has entered the cartridge through an aperture 18 in the wall 15 adjacent the end of a (corner) portion 59 of the external wall extending around and spaced from the periphery of roller 19, remote from a utilization position whereat a (magnetic) head 131 projecting through an aperture 17 in cartridge wall 13 and passes the moving tape against pads 25 of resilient material on a wall 21. Tape from roller 19 passes over a guide ramp 51 into a storage chamber whence it is withdrawn between a barrier 52 and a guide roller 53, through a passage 32 between walls 16 and 22, over a friction pad 29, around guide post 26, through passage 32, under head 131 and, under tension, around roller 19. When the cartridge is required for, or not in use, e.g. upon entry into or withdrawal from a housing whereby the operatively associated apparatus (including the head 131 and capstan 91) and the cartridge are combined, the apertures 17 and 18 are opened or closed by a sliding shutter 15. The capstan 91 is driven through a one-way clutch and mounted on a spring-loaded pivotable bracket so as to bias towards the cartridge, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown). The tape is shown stored in chamber 20 in the form of loops which, guided as described, have no tendency to entangle or deform the tape or obstruct movement thereof in known manner represented in Figs. 1-3B (not shown. The invention is applicable to cartridges for endless tapes such as ink ribbon or photographic film and to cartridges containing single-reel endless tapes, Figs. 13A and 13B (not shown).
