NEW THERAPEUTIC APPLICATION OF ACETYL-D,1-CARNITINE AND OTHER ACYL DERIVATIVES OF D,1-CARNITINE

Compsn. for treating myocardial anoxia, ischaemia, arrhythmic syndromes, fatigue and cardiac decompensation, in humans or animals contains a d,l-carnitine deriv. of formula: (CH2)2N encircled positive -CH2-CH(OR)-CH2-COO encircled negative (I) or its salt. (where R is acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, hydroxybutyryl, hexanoyl, octanoyl, decanoyl, palmitoyl, stearyl or acetoacetyl), together with a pharmaceutical acceptable support. (I) have superior cardiotropic properties to d,l-carnitine (i.e. (I, R is H)) and also give superior protection against the toxicity of adrenalin. (I) are slightly less toxic, LD50 is 630-761 mg/kg mouse i.v. c.f. 610 mg/kg for (I, R is H). The cardiac activity of (I) is independent of coenzyme A.
