A piston (3) which can be subjected to compressed air via an air inlet (2) is mounted in axially displaceable fashion in a brake cylinder (1). As the force output member, the piston (3) carries a piston rod (4), the end of which is pivotably attached in the central area of a lever member (5) extending transversely to the piston rod. One end of the lever member (5) is pivotably attached, via a pin (6) to an output member (7). The friction elements of a friction brake are articulated on the end of the output member (7) which projects to the outside. Rotatably mounted on the other end of the lever member (5) is a rolling element (9) capable of rolling on a wedge surface (10) serving as a fixed abutment. The wedge surface (10) has a portion (11) with a relatively steep slope, which merges via a rounded salient (12) into a portion (13) with a less steep slope. When the piston (3) is moved downwards by the compressed air, the rolling element (11) first of all rolls along portion (11) and then along portion (13). The output member (7) thus pushes the friction elements of the brake rapidly into the position of contact and then more slowly but with greater force against the rotating element of the brake. IMAGE
