An elongated aluminium workpiece (S) such as a wire is electrolytically freed of its surface oxide layer in a first bath (10). The bath (10) contains a high-strength mineral acid and an electrode (13). Subsequently, the workpiece (S) is zinc-plated or tin-plated in an intermediate bath (11) by means of a non-electrolytic dip treatment. A further bath (20) can be used to provide the workpiece with a bronze deposit, whereafter it is electroplated with tin in a metal coating bath (12). In this arrangement, the bath fluid itself serves as electrical contact in each case, which makes it possible to dispense with fault-prone sliding or rolling contacts. IMAGE
