[Also in Divisions C2, C3 and C7] A polyfunctional catalyst having (i) acidic or basic sites or both and (ii) metal or metal compound sites or both, for use in polystep reactions, comprises an ion-exchange resin containing a catalytically active metal or metal compound, or both. Preferred catalysts have metal sites and acidic or basic sites, the preferred metals being those of groups IB and VIII, the preferred acidic sites being sulfonic, phenolsulfonic, phosphonic, carboxylic or phenolic acid sites and the preferred basic sites being primary, secondary, tertiary or quaternary amine basic sites. Reactions in which these catalysts are used include reaction of an aliphatic ketone and an aliphatic alcohol to give an ether and reaction of a cycloalkanone and an aliphatic carboxylic acid to produce a cycloalkyl ester of the acid and reactions may be carried out in the liquid phase and at a temperature below 180‹C.
