3-Bromopropionamide (I) is prepd. by reacting acrylamide with HBr and alkylene oxide, using glacial AcOH as solvent for HBr and also as reaction medium. Pure (I) can be prepd. in high yield. Use of HBr in soln. facilitates handling and measuring out. Replacement of previously used AcOMe or AcOEt as solvent by AcOH obviates formation of toxic MeBr or EtBr as by-products. Concn. of HBr in glacial AcOH is esp. 30-33 wt.%; 6.5-8.5 pts.wt. soln. of HBr in glacial AcOH are added per pt.wt. acrylamide, in order to introduce 2-2.2 mol. HBr/mol. acrylamide.
