The silent pile or sheet-pile driving plant uses a ground-level anchor beam (4) as the reaction for a descending climbing machine (7). The beam (4) is secured by ground anchors (2). The climber (7) bears on the top of the pile (6) and travels down vertical rods (5) from the beam (4). Under this system a single pile is fully driven before proceeding to the next pile. Two parallel anchor beams (4) may be deployed, spaced apart and flanking the subject pile (6). A vertical rod (5) extends from each beam (4) to support the climbing machine (7). A double climbing module (8a, 8b), is provided on each rod (5) with a transverse link beam (L) transmitting load to the pile head. The operation of the double climbing modules (8a, 8b) may be coordinated to obtain incremental pile penetration.
