A mounting arrangement accommodates two electronic flash units (12, 14) on either side of a camera (10) lens (11) with facility for controlling the light intensity (13, 15) at the cross-over point of the light cones. The units (12, 14) are designed to illuminate the subject to be photographed (20) as though from a virtual light source behind the film plane (B). This arrangement spreads the light. The strong shadows normally cast by one flash source are counteracted by the other source so that a more naturally illuminated subject results. In an arrangement using the usual single flash unit, a mirror is installed on the opposite side to form a crossing beam.
