Outrigger system is for use near the rear axle and comprises parallel sliding girders across the vehicle chassis and with jacks adjustable for height at their outer ends. The girders (5, 6, 12, 13) are so accommodated in guides in the chassis (1) that their lengthwise axes coincide or nearly so. The guides can be part of the same box-section chassis girder (11), into which the sliding girders protrude. The inner most ends of the latter can fit one inside the other in the retracted position. The sliding girders can be extended and retracted by actuators, typically hydraulic rams mounted in external housings.
