A hydraulic brake mechanism for the two suspension for a ski-lift, together with a cable drum for the tow cable is acted on by a brake mechanism in rolling and unrolling directions. The drum is coupled to a prestressable helical strip spring for drawing cable in. This spring (10) acts as circulating pump in a spring case (9) filled with oil (15). It effects braking on the drum (2) by its axial operative play (25) and operative speed. The play may be adjustable by a setting disc (11) with thread (20) and counter matrix (17). There can also be a set screw for oil compression, and the system operates with low pressures, and is resistant to wear and impervious to temp. effects.
