Methylamino-acetaldehyde acetal derivs prepn. - by reacting halo-acetaldehyde acetal derivs. with excess methylamine in presence of alcohol and alkali alcoholate

Prepn. of methylaminoacetaldehyde acetal derivs. of formula Me-NH-CH2-CH(OR)2 (I) comprises reacting cpds. of formula (II) X-CH2-CH(OR)2 (II) (where X is Cl or Br and R is Me or Et, with excess methylamine, pref. in the presence of an inert solvent or an alcohol esp. MeOH and/or EtOH at elevated temps. and pressure and in an anhydrous medium. (I) is then set free by treating the reaction mixt. with a basic agent and isolating the end product from the reaction mixt. in an anhydrous medium. The alcoholate is of formula ROM (where M is an alkali metal pref. Na or K). (I) are esp. used for the prepn. of herbicides, biocides, and pesticides. The prepn. is simple and safe, unlike previous processes which had waste products which posed environmental problems. (I) is obtd. in good yields of over 90%.
