A coal cutting machine has a main cutter and an auxiliary cutter for making a groove in the coal face. These are supported above a scraper chain conveyor (11) following the coal face. They are guided by a structure mounted on the side (28) of the conveyor adjacent to the coal face. This structure consists a rectangular plate (27) greater than the height of the conveyor side, so that it projects above it, spaced from the side. This gap is enclosed by an angle (32) at the top and a closure plate (35) at the bottom. In the space (34) between is a line of spacers (29) made of e.g. tube.
