The safety switch is esp. designed for use with laboratory apparatus and allows maximum variation in the layout of the equipment since the safety circuit is independent of any safety enclosure. The load or apparatus (1) which is to be connected to the mains power supply (4) or other electrical source, is located inside a safety cover (3). Access is obtained by raising the lid of the cover (2). A fully encapsulated safety switch (5) is connected between the source and the apparatus. The switch can be operated magnetically or by other means. The switch is fitted into a recess (6) in the fixed part of the enclosure. The lower part of the lid has an operating magnet (7). On lowering the lid, the magnet operates the switch contacts in the fashion of a proximity switch, completing the circuit to the equipment.
