The device has an operating and display front (3) comprising a system changeover switch (32) for operating the device in a remote-controlled manner over a communication module. A switch drive is provided with a switch lock for switching-on and switching-off of a switch contact system, and a protection module detects an over-current or short-circuit current and releases the switch lock. The display front is connected with a device carrier in a fixed manner, and a main current separation contact system is arranged in the device carrier. An independent claim is also included for a switching cabinet comprising a slide-in cassette for accommodating a switching device.
