In selectively combatting weeds in maize, rice and other cereal cultures, the seeds, the soil intended for sowing, or culture surfaces which have been sown or are occupied by plants is/are treated simultaneously or successively with a herbicide of formula (I) and an antidote of formulae (II), (III) or (IV). In the formulae, R1 is H, F, Cl, Br, I or CF3; R2 is H or Cl; R3 is OR, OM, NH2, NH(lower alkyl) or N(lower alkyl)2; R is H or 1-10C alkyl; M is an equiv. of an (in)organic cation; R'1 is H, 1-5C alkyl (opt. halogenated or substd. by CN or 3-6C cycloalkyl), 3-5C alkenyl or alkynyl, or opt. halogenated is not 6C alkoxyalkyl, dialkoxyalkyl or alkenyloxyalkyl; R'2 is 1-5C alkyl (opt. halogenated or substd. by CN or 3-6C cycloalkyl), 3-5C alkenyl or alkynyl, opt. halogenated is not 6C alkoxyalkyl, dialkoxyalkyl or alkenyloxyalkyl, or opt. vinyl- or ethynyl-substd. 3-6C cycloalkyl; or NR'1R'2 is 5- to 7-membered heterocycle opt. additionally contg. an O-, N- or S-atom and/or mono- or poly-substd. by lower alkyl; R"1 is H or is not 5C alkenyl or alkyl; R"2 is not 6C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl, is not 6C dialkoxyalkyl, or opt. vinyl- or ethynyl-substd. 3-6C cycloalkyl; or RR"1R"2 is heterocycle opt. contg. a further N-, O- or S-atom and/or mono- or poly-substd. by lower alkyl; n = 1,2,3,4,5 or 6; R1 is opt. halo-substd. =6C alkyl, acetoxy-(lower alkyl), acetoxy-(halo lower alkyl) or aryl; and X is Cl or Br. The antidotes (II), (III) and (IV) unexpectedly increase the selectivity of the herbicides (I), which are active against grasses.
