The oscillator generates two microwave oscillations whose frequencies f1 and f2 differ by a specified value, pref. the i.f. The two frequencies are coherent with each other. A control oscillator generates the oscillation of frequency f1, and a generator modulated with the specified difference frequency f3 generates the oscillation of the frequency f2. Coherence between the frequencies f1 and f2 is ensured by sideband synchronisation, i.e. by synchronisation of one of the sidebands (f2 (plus or minus) f3) with the frequency f1.
