The engine comprises a cylinder (2) with rotary pistons (3, 3') which define the chamber (5, 5') receiving the fuel mixture as well as that removing the exhaust gases. The cylinder unit comprises at least two contra-rotating parallel pistons in the form of annular segments whose paths intersect. The arrangement is such that at the moment of fuel injection and ignition in the combustion chamber (5) formed by one piston (3), the chamber (5') formed by the other piston (3') is disconnected from chamber (5) and vice versa. The piston shafts (4, 4') may be coupled via gear wheels. The engine may comprise a number of cylinders (2) with respective pistons on common shafts (4, 4').
