Barrel bungs made of thermoplastics material are embossed by feeding the bungs supplied form a magazine along a first path to a heated embossing tool which is then moved into contact with the base of the bung to effect the embossing, after which the bung is separated from the tool and displaced along a second parth for discharging. Excessive prodn. of wrongly dated bungs is prevented. Bungs are dated on their way to barrel bunging device. Tampering with dates by users is prevented.
