In a process in which a beam of high energy charged particles is impinged on a work-piece to provide a weld, the effective zone of impact is aligned with a desired zone of impact and the effective position of impact is aligned with a reference position. The process involves detecting the relative position between the beam and the desired impact zone so as to produce a first error signal representing any deviation between the effective and desired impact zones, detecting the effective position of the beam with respect to the reference position so as to produce at least a second error signal indicating the total deviation between the effective zone of impact of the beam and the reference position, using the first error signal to correct any deviation between the effective and desired zones of impact and using the second error signal to correct any deviation between the effective position of impact and the reference position. The relative positions between the beam, the weld zone and the device supplying the weld material can be maintained.
