Liquid membrane capsule systems comprising an aqueous interior phase surrounded by an nonaqueous oil exterior phase resulting in an emulsion which is suspended in an aqueous suspension phase and in which the aqueous suspension phase contains an irreversible coating component comprising a long chain polymer to render the system resistant to coalescence, are used in the purification of toxin-containing liquids obtained in haemodialysis, haemofiltration or peritoneal dialysis. Reference is also made to their use in direct treatment of blood and in water purification. The aqueous suspension phase may also contain a trivalent metal salt or a heavy divalent metal salt.
