Treatment of phosphate minerals comprises washing and flaking the crude mineral, removing fines and concentrating the slurry, then adding a flocculating agent before filtration to agglomerate the remaining fines in the slurry, which is then filtered and the solid dried conventionally. The filtrate is recovered and recycled after purification. Fines are more completely removed leading to more rapid sepn. of the solid from the liquid phase, and a drier cake issuing from the separators. The liquid phase is more readily purified for recycling. Typically, the moisture content of the sepd. mineral phosphate cake before drying was reduced from 15-16% to about 10-12% by contact for 15-60 secs. with a flocculating agent.
