The machine is used for automatically or semi-automatically packaging fragile or non-self supporting products. It has a gangway, the width of which tapers from being larger than the width of packaging required at its entrance to being the same size at its exit. The gangway is loaded from the wide end and it has a central slot which allows the products to be pushed along and compacted together until they reach the required longitudinal spacing. At the same time a band of corrugated cardboard is wrapped around the products. The thickness of the cardboard can be varied for different degrees of protection. The group of products sealed in the cardboard band are then provided with a cardboard lid and base which can either be one piece or two separate pieces.
