Switch position monitoring system - uses photoelectric detector to test for open and closed state and arcing in encased HV switch

The switch-position monitoring system, is used for a gas-isolated HV switch. It detects the position of the moving contact of the switching device using a photoelectric detector. The system not only determines whether the switch is open or closed but also detects the presence of an arc. Two windows are set into the casing of the switch diametrically opposite one another. A light source is located behind one window and the photodetector behind the other. The light passes across the path travelled by the moving contact. Alternatively, the light source and the photodetector may be on the same side and a mirror located behind the other window.
