An electrical heating element mounted in the engine carburettor to preheat the intake fuel. The electrical heating element (5) is mounted inside the metallic sheath (4) and insulated from it by means of the refractory base (6) which supports the terminals (7, 8). The element (5) is connected in series with a variable resistance which is controlled by the accelerator pedal so that the heating effect can be varied to suit engine conditions.
