A generator group is used for installations that need to be isolated from normal power supply networks in order to avoid harmonics and transient signals etc. The total weight and volume of the group is minimised by removing the need for the flywheel and combining the group into one machine. The need for flywheel is by reversing the dynamic role of rotor and stator such that the 'rotor' windings (7, 8) and mass is central but static, the outer 'stator' windings (12, 13) rotating on a shaft (5) axial to the group. Damping is achieved using a squirrel cage winding.
