Bread is transferred in balance pans along a predetermined path. The pans can pivot around a horizontal axis which is transverse to teh path and is connected to drive means. A first stop, upstream of a bend in the path, temporarily stops forward movement of the rear of the pan so that the front part swings towards the second stop, downstream of the bend. At the instant of turning over the rear part of the pan is in contact with the first stop and the bottom of the front part contacts the second stop.
