Dynamic assessment of engine performance - uses electronic data processing to measure acceleration time under load

Motors, typically i.c. engines but also other types, are tested by loading them with e.g. a flywheel or rollers in static arrangements or simply by driving a road vehicle along. The time to accelerate between predetermined speeds is measured and related to engine performance. Information processing is pref. by electronic means using a random access memory and a microprocessor, with sensing elements operated by the ignition, the fuel injection, or the moving parts of the engine (2), the transmission (3, 5, 6, 7), the wheels (8) or the test rollers (14) where used.
