The composite bridging strip for a buried joint (5) is suitable for an expansion joint of a highway bridge deck. The strip distributes movements over an increased length of the flexible covering (8), is not bonded to the substructure (6, 7), and is installed in a single operation. The strip is of textile calico (1) with a plastics band (2) bonded on its longitudinal centre line. The calico (1) may have a high transverse elasticity and a low longitudinal elasticity. The band (2) may have a longitudinal elasticity which is nominally less than that of the calico (1). The band (2) may have one non-adherant major face (4) which is presented to the substructure and the other major face (3) may be bonded to the calico (1).
