A process for the manufacture of the manufacture of a water-soluble, relative xanthenum dyestuff of the formula 1 of the accompanying drawings wherein R and R" represents hydrogen atoms, halogen atoms, hydroxyl, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, carboxyl or sulfonic acid groups, R1 and R2 stand for hydrogen atoms, lower alkyl groups, carboxyl-lower alkyl groups, HSO3 -lower alkyl, HSO3 -O- lower alkyl, phenyl or HN-acyl groups and R1 and R2 represents together with the nitrogen atoms an alkylene amine ring optionally containing before atoms, R3 represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, A stands for a mono-nuclear or binuclear aromatic rest and W for a bivalent atom or group of atoms, Y represents a grouping of the formula 2 or 3 wherein X stands for a hydroxyl group or O-SOH3 -O-FO3H2, halogen or -O-acyl capable of being split off by an alkaline agent, R4 represents a hydrogen atom or lower alkyl group, R and n each stand for 0, 1 or 2, q for 0 or 1 and p for 1 for 2, the lower alkyl or alkoxy having upto 5 carbon atom which comprises condensing in two steps 1 mol of a dihalogenoxanthlium compound of the general formula 4, where each R1 is a chlorine or bromine atom with at least 1 mol of an amine compound of the general formula 5 and condensing the resulting product with at least 1 mol of an amine compound of the general formula R, R", R1, R2, R3, R4, R5, R6, R7 and p and q having the aforesaid meanings, the condensations with compounds of formula 5 or 6 being is any sequence in an aqueous, aqueous-organic medium carrying out the first condensation step at a temperature of from 0 to 12oC and carrying out the second condensation step of the condensation product at a temperature of from about 70 to 200C, is the presence of an acid binding agent, and converting the obtained xanthylium compounds of the eneral formula 7 by treatment with an esterfing agent into xanthenium dyestuffs of the above general formula 1 in which Z in the grouping Yof formula 3 represents the group -O-SO3H2, O-FO3H2, halogen or -O-acyl which are capable of being split off, when desired by treatment with as alkaline represent to result into xanthenium dyestuffs of the above general formula 1 when Y is the grouping of formula 2.
