The thermoplastic body of a container is ultraonsically bonded to a thermoplastic base or cover at its end, using a sonotrode which both vibrates and also moves along the axis of the container and has an end recess to take the base or cover. The end of the body also fits closely into this recess in which base/cover is placed first, the vibrating sonotrode is moved to the end of the body, that end is turned inwards between the base/cover and a supporting surface inside the body, finally the overlap formed with base/cover is ultansonically welded. Simple method, producing aesthetically good appearance as no fused polymer flows out to spoil it nor inwards to reduce the effective capacity, suitable for capping collapsible tubes.
