Two or more components are telescopically extensible and retractable relative to one another. The inner piece is a threaded spindle, with a setting nut supported on the end face of the outside piece. The strut or brace is used in building. The angle of pitch of the thread on the spindle (11) is set close to the limit of self-locking, at about 6 degrees. This permits accelerated adjustment of the setting nut and easier loosening of the nut under loading.
