The tool retainer is fitted into the body of a pneumatic road drill and is interchangeable with the spring clip or the latch type. It comprises a sleeve (15), with a hexagonal bore for the tool bit (7), pressed into the drill body (1). This body has a lug (12) on opposite sides, each with an inclined slot. These hold the sides (21, 22) of an S-shaped spring clip (24), its ends (23) fitting into holes (14) higher up (13) the body. The bend (20) of the clip retains the loose fitting tool. A bracket on the sleeve collar has two sides to locate the latch of the latch type holder.
