New benzyl ethers of cyclic 1,2-diols are of formula (I) (R1 is substd. phenyl; R2 is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, haloalkyl or -CHX-R1; X is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, haloalkyl or opt. substd. phenyl; Y1 and Y2 are each H, alkyl or opt. substd. phenyl; A is opt. substd., satd. or unsatd. alkylene). (I) are plant growth regulators, esp. herbicides and can be used selectively, esp. to control grasses. (I) are also defoliants, desiccants and germination inhibitors. (I) are effective against Alopecurus and Poa annua as well as against grasses such as Digitaria, Echinochloa, panicum and/or Setaria in cultures of sugar beet, soya beans, cotton, rapeseed, ground nuts, vegetables, maize and rice. Suitable application rates are 0.1-10 kg./ha pref. 0.1-5 kg./ha.
