A carbon dioxide laser uses the exhaust gases of an i.c. engine. The laser is fixed and pulsed. It is used on engines to drive ancillary units. This increases efficiency and reduces pollution. The combustion gases are partic. suitable for laser amplification because of the low oxygen content. The flue gases from e.g. Otto, Diesel and rotary engines as well as gas turbines are used as the laser medium. The engine is used to drive vacuum pumps, circulating pumps and generators which operate the electrical discharge gap in the laser instrument.
