Adjustable infrared laser pumped by other lasers - esp. where Stark:effect chamber is pumped by two carbon di:oxide lasers to obtain laser beam with adjustable wavelength
The appts. includes a Stark-effect chamber, in which a principal active cpd. (I) is located between two Stark electrodes, which are each supplied with a high voltage (H.T.) by a generator. The chamber is in a resonant cavity formed by a semireflecting mirror and a semireflecting diffraction grating. At least one pumping laser is used with an optical train to feed energy into the chamber, which forms the output laser. In the pref. appts., two H.T. generators and two pumping lasers are actuated by a synchronisation controller. The pref. cpd. (I) is CH3F, but other cpds. such as CH3Cl, AsF3 or CH3OH may be used. An adjustable laser output between e.g. 12-20 microns wavelength can be obtd. for use in photochemistry or the sepn. of isotopes.
