The spacer (10) is intended for stackable containers (13, 19). It comprises a base plate (12) with spigot (11, 14) fitting in the upper end of one container (13). A tope frame (17) has a flanged edge (18) capable of receiving the lower end of another container (19). The plate (12) and the frame (17) are connected by corner posts (15) so as to leave space (21) between them for inserting the fork of a lift truck. The support for the container may, alternatively, be formed by the corner posts (15) only whilst the spacer may alternatively have an open frame fitting on the container (13).
