A safety system for the sun roof of a motor vehicle, prevents it from closing when there is an obstacle, such as any part of the body, in the opening. The sliding roof can be operated by hand or by a motorised drive. It has a sensing element in the form of a strip, which runs along one or more sides of the frame of the sliding roof. The sensor and the drive operate in conjunction with detectors, which react when the sensor touches an obstacle. The detector is fitted with a switch linked to the control mechanism of the sliding roof. The sensor responds when subjected to a pressure stress in the plane of movement of the roof.
