A grounding switch for high voltage equipment is normally enclosed within an insulating gas filled enclosure. The switch is manually operated by a lever (32) acting on a knob (30) and has a direct action, i.e. there is no intermediary mechanism. The switch mechanism is mounted within a protective cover on one wall of the enclosure, and an activating rod (24) extends through a hole in the wall. The rod moves along its own axis through a sliding fit gasket and an annular metal screen, acting as a potential divider, to make contact, when driven by an associated two position lever with a fixed contact mounted on the high voltage conductor within the enclosure.
