A power supply system for loads on a motor-caravan, camper, boat or other motor vehicle has an alternator-rectifier unit (14) driven by the vehicle engine and connected through a current regulator to a main battery (11), the vehicle electrical loads being supplied by the alternator-rectifier unit, by a supplementary battery (12) or from a mains supply cable (3) through a transformer-rectifier (17) according to the operating conditions. The system further includes a switching unit (6) including an electromechanical control device (18) which switches the loads from the supplementary battery (12) to the transformer- rectifier (17) when the mains supply is connected, and an electronic device (19) which switches the loads from the supplementary battery to the alternator-rectifier unit (14) when the engine speed exceeds a threshold r.p.m., switching of the loads back to the supplementary battery (12) occurring only after the engine speed has dropped below the threshold r.p.m. for longer than a predetermined delay time.
