The large caliber ammunition handling system is for the gun turret of an armoured vehicle. The shellsa re extracted vertically from a storage position and swung up to a horizontal position and inserted (38) into the breech of the gun. The transfer element (36) carrying out the operation acts inside a guide formed by a telescopic tube (40). This tube has an outer section (42) inside which slides an inner section (44). On the front of the transfer element is a gripping device (34) and behind it is a drive member (46). The outer tube is also connected to a further drive device (48) formed by two drive belts.
