Adhesive compsn. comprises graft copolymers prepd. by free radical suspension graft polymerisation at 160-150 degrees C of an unsatd. cpd. (I)on a substrate comprising a copolymer of ethylene with a vinyl or acrylic ester or an atactic polyolefin. (I) comprises (a) unsatd. mono- or dicarboxylic acids, their anhydrides, amides or esters (the ester gp. being glycidyle or 1-18C amino- or hydroxylalkyl), vinyl esters of satd. 2-18C carboxylic acids, vinylpyridines, vinylpyrolidones or mixts. of thest opt. also with styrene cpds. and/or nitriles of above acids, and (b) mono- or dicarboxylic acid esters where the ester gp. is a 1-18C alkyl, mixts. of such esters opt. also with unsatd, mocarboxylic acids, their nitriles, anhydrides, amides, unsatd. mono-or dicarboxylic acid esters where the ester gp. is 1-18C aminoalkyl or hydroxyalkyl or glycidyl, styrene cpds., vinyl esters of 2-18C satd. acids, vinylpyridines, vinylpyrolidones, and opt. unsatd. dicarboxylic acids. The grafted copolymers comprise by wt. 0.05-75% grafted cpds. and 99.95-25% substrate polymer. The grafted copolymers are used in combination with such additives as tacky resins, waxes paraffins, bitumens, diluent polymers, fillers and/or pigments, and stabilisers as glues in dispersion or soln., as melt-adhesive, as pressure sensitive adhesives and as mastics. The grafted copolymers have good adhesion both to nonpretreated polar or non polar substrates, good mechanical strength and impact improved heat resistance to the adhesive compsns.
