The overhead crane (1) uses a hydraulically operated grab (7) to lift large cylindrical objects (16) such as rolls of paper, or coils of metal sheet. The jaws (13) of the grab consist of the two rigid plates (17), each with two hinged plates (14a, 14b) to enable the jaws to fit around a cylindrical surface. The plates are mounted on a horizontal hinge pin (21) so that the jaws can be swung through an angle of 90 deg.. This enables the jaws to pick up the roll (16) from a horizontal position and place it in a store in a vertical position and vice-versa.
