A toy cash register has programme plates depicting various items of merchandise and monetary values, each plate having a total value for each grouping of items. It is actuated and operated by tensioned springs. An OPEN button releases a cash drawer for positive opening under another spring mechanism. Coordinated with a programme plate inserted into the toy are latching pawls associated with respective monetary keys. Each programme plate is provided with precoded channels along respective edges which, in cooperation with the latching pawls, require operation of correct keys before a 'ring up' occurs and simultaneously a ding of an internal bell occurs.
