Compsns. are obtd. by extracting insecticidal substances from plants with a liq. organic solvent having a b.pt. of 100 degrees C (pref. 200 degrees C) and a LD50 of =500 mg/kg (p.o. rat). The solvent can be (a) an aromatic carboxylate ester, e.g. a benzoate, benzylate, cinnamate or phthalate esp. dimethyl o-phthalate; (b) a phosphate or phosphite ester; or (c) a terpene or polyterpene. The compsns. are obtd. in the form of stable solns. or suspensions (esp. of rotenone or pyrethrin) which are easier to handle than prior art powders and are practically harmless to humans and domestic animals.
