Dioxolanes for perfumery use prepd. from glycols and carbonyl cpds.: Cpds. of formula (where A is -CH2-CH2- or -CH=CH-; R1 and R2 are H, 1-3C alkyl or together form a tri- or tetramethylene group; and if both A are -CH=CH-, one has trans- and the other cis- or trans-configuration and in case of a cis-trans configuration of both ethylenic bonds, both O atoms of dioxolane ring are in trans position) are used in perfumery and toilet or cosmetic articles and have a mushroom to wood or wood-amber fragrance. They are prepared by subjecting a glycol (where both OH are in trans position should the 2 ethylenic bonds exhibit a cis-trans configuration) to acid-catalysed ring-closure with R1R2C=O; or if saturated (I) is desired, by catalytically hydrogenating a cpd. (I) in which both A are -CH=CH-.
