Process uses a granular or powdery oleophilic resin obtd. by fixing org. ions to an ion exchange resin, and comprises injecting the contaminated water to the base of an oleophilic resin column at a flow rate sufficient to fluidise the resin bed; mechanically disintegrating, at the top of the column, aggregates of resin bound coalesced hydrocarbon which have a critical size and density less than water which determines their rate of ascent in the column for disintegration; after decanting at the top of the column, with drawing the mechanically liberated hydrocarbons, while the grains of freed resin redescend for recycle; and withdrawing the treated water a a zone intermediate the upper part of the fluidised bed and the disintegrating zone.
