The mechanism comprises motor-driven reciprocating slicing knives and a ram to continuously feed the loaf to the knives as it is sliced. The ram movement is derived from rotation of a shaft (34). The knife drive crank also operates an air pump cylinder to produce an adjustable pressure which is used (via 20 and solenoid valve 26) to power a pneumatic cylinder (21) providing the feed movement of the ram. The lever (30) rotating the shaft (34) may have an extension (31) which operates (32) a switch (33) to stop the motor when the loaf is fully fed through.
