In an electric clothes tumble drier, using a forced airstream in a closed circuit, there is an additional heat exchanger for the drying airstream in front of the air-cooled heat exchanger which is charged by the drying airstream after the air-cooled heat exchanger. Design gives a drying cycle with low energy consumption in a unit which requires relatively little space. Additional heat exchanger is in two sections, straddling the air-cooled heat exchanger, with a heat carrier medium passing between the sections in a closed loop. Heat carrier medium can be a vapour or a fluid, with a fan or recirculating pump to give it movement. The heat exchanger can be a counter-stream or a thermal tube type, with the tube running up from heat reception to the heat delivery side, or it can be a rotary heat exchanger. There is a trap for the condensation under the air-cooled heat exchanger.
